Fuel Leak Incident at Miraflores Locks: Cleanup and Restoration Efforts Underway

May 26th, 2024: In the afternoon, a fuel leak occurred during the transit of a vessel heading south through the Miraflores locks, specifically in the upper chamber of the east lane. The Panama Canal Authority reported that fuel cleanup efforts are currently underway.

The leak was contained within the upper chamber of the lock. Following the incident, members of the Fire Department and specialists from the Canal’s Spill Control team initiated cleanup operations.

The vessel was removed on May 27th in the afternoon, and further cleanup operations will be conducted in the upper chamber of the Miraflores locks later today.

Miraflores East lane will be fully operational for tomorrow’s transit schedule.
