Panama City – August 3rd, 2023 | Due to the measures implemented by the Canal Authority on July 30th in response to the prevailing severe drought, the transit queue has been steadily growing. As of 00001hrs on August 3rd, there are currently 152 vessels awaiting transit, of which 100 fall into the super category. The impact on the super segment has been particularly pronounced, attributed to a combination of imposed restrictions and the high influx of arrivals.
The waiting time for non-booked vessels is continuing to increase, creating a progressively challenging situation for securing a booking slot. The Canal Authority’s regulations favor customers with the highest rankings. The demand for booking slots far surpasses the limited availability, prompting operators to actively seek bookings in order to mitigate extended waiting days.
Please be informed that the earliest available slots, based on a first-come, first-served basis, are as follows:
- Super Category: October 2nd
- Regular Category: August 14th
While the Canal Authority has not yet provided a specific timeline for the duration of these measures, it is projected that the situation could persist for several months, contingent upon the forthcoming rainfall patterns.
We strongly recommend active participation in the booking/auction system to minimize the waiting time for your vessels. For guidance on engaging with the booking or auction system, please reach out to our operators at operations@nortonlilly.com.pa.
