As part of our unwavering commitment to decarbonization and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the Panama Canal announced an initiative on August 1, 2024, through Advisory to Shipping No. A-25-2024. This program invited our clients to adopt energy efficiency measures in addition to low-carbon technologies and fuels, in an effort towards decarbonization of the shipping industry.
Following an in-depth analysis and market research to establish eligibility criteria—that considers energy efficiency indicators, fuel types, regional infrastructure availability, and the characteristics of the vessels transiting the Canal—we have decided to postpone the launch of the Low-Carbon Transit Slot initiative until April 1st, 2025.
We greatly appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to ensure this initiative achieves the highest standards of effectiveness and equity. We will communicate further steps towards this initiative through an Advisory to Shipping.
