Postponement of the 2nd Draft Reduction in Neopanamax Locks

PANAMA FLASH! Panama City – April 1st, 2022

RE: Advisory to Shipping No. A-10-2022

Precipitation has continued to fall in the Canal watershed during the past weeks, allowing the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to postpone once again the draft reduction in the Neopanamax locks announced in Advisory to Shipping A-10-2022.

Therefore, the maximum authorized draft for the Neopanamax locks will remain at 15.09 m (49.5 ft.) TFW, until further notice.

The ACP continues to monitor the level of Gatun Lake in order to announce future draft adjustments in a timely manner

What condition will be in effect during the Scheduled Lane Outage at Pedro Miguel Locks?

During the scheduled maintenance from May 9th to May 16th, 2023, the West Lane of Pedro Miguel Locks will be temporarily closed. As a result, Condition 2 will be in effect, as per OP NOTICE TO SHIPPING No. N-7-2023. Applications for reserved transit slots during this period will be accepted starting from May 6th, 2023. Please note that the Just-In-Time (JIT) transit slots for supers will be limited to one per direction, while regular vessels will maintain their one per direction allocation. The daily auction slot for supers will be reduced to one, and the daily auction slot for regulars will be suspended. Neopanamax vessels will not be affected by these changes. Due to the reduced canal capacity, demand for transit slots will likely exceed availability. Please plan accordingly as no supers slots will be offered when the 3rd period opens.

Panama Canal finds necessary to update maximum draft in the Neopanamax Locks

Despite the ACP’s continuous efforts to minimize draft restrictions by implementing water-saving measures in the transit operation, the level of Gatun Lake has been falling faster than originally predicted. The precipitation in the Canal watershed for the first 11 days of April is approximately 70% below the historical average, and the water supplied by the rivers to the Canal’s watershed is 80% below average.
